Academic Advising Overview

Academic Advising is an opportunity for you to engage with faculty and staff in the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) Department and to assist in identifying academic goals, developing educational plans, and maximizing your educational experience. If you have an assigned adviser, please check the specific instructions for making an appointment with that person below. If you do not have an assigned adviser or are interested in speaking with a BMB advisor about changing majors or minoring in one of our programs, please call 814-863-5487 to schedule an appointment.

Walk-In Advising Hours

Jenn Keefer and Amber Miller both provide walk-in advising hours as a service to our students.  Walk-in advising is reserved for  brief concerns that will take no longer than 10-15 minutes.  If it becomes evident that you have more extensive questions or concerns than you realized, you will be asked to schedule a regular advising appointment.

Walk-In Hours:

Ms. Keefer’s Walk-in hours are held on Tuesday mornings, beginning Tuesday, January 21 from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.  Scheduled appointments can be made by calling #863-5487 or by using Starfish.

  • Please remember that walk-in advising is reserved for brief concerns that will take no longer than 10-15 minutes.  If it becomes evident that you have more extensive questions or concerns than you realized, you will be asked to schedule a regular advising appointment.

 

Special Semester Walk-in Hours:

Add/Drop Week Hours: 

  • Monday           9:00 - 11:30 AM & 1:30 – 4:00 PM
  • Tuesday          9:00 – 11:30 AM & 1:30 – 4:00 PM
  • Wednesday    9:00 – 11:30 AM & 1:30 – 3:00 PM
  • Thursday        9:00 – 11:30 AM & 1:30 – 3:00 PM
  • Friday              9:00 – 11:30 AM & 1:30 – 4:00 PM

Add/Drop week walk-in appointments are brief 15-minute appointments intended to help students with scheduling questions and drop/add issues.  A longer scheduled appointment should be made for course planning, letter requests, change-of-major, and other specific issues.

Please check-in for all appointments in the 2nd floor Science Advising Center reception.

Honors Advising

In addition to an assigned BMB faculty adviser, first and second year students can also meet with Ms. Jennifer Keefer to discuss degree requirements, Schreyer plans, course selection, and other general advising topics.  Please call 814-863-5487 to schedule an appointment with Jenn.

Pre-Health Advising

Students interested in health professions are encouraged to reach out to the pre-health advisers in the Science Advising Center. 

Student Petitions

Petition requests for common petitions (ie move 3 for general education) can be entered though our online petition form.  Requests to substitute non-BMB independent research credits in place of BMB 496 can be entered through this form. For any other petition requests, please attend walk-in advising or call 814-863-5487 to schedule an appointment to discuss your petition request.
