The Office for Innovation
Our college is rich with discovery-driven research, but moving from discovery to real-world application can feel overwhelming. Many conventional programs rely on market-driven frameworks (problem → solution) designed for late-stage business planning. However, this approach rarely fits innovations sparked by new knowledge or the observation of natural phenomena, as often occurs in the sciences. Here, imagination drives the vision for how discoveries might benefit society, rather than a predefined market need. These technology-driven innovations (solution → problem) have the power to fundamentally reshape markets rather than merely respond to them.
Our Office for Innovation exists to:
- Provide guidance at the earliest conception of an idea
- Help researchers explore and select use cases that demonstrate the potential impact of their discoveries.
- Provide structured pathways, mentorship, and resources for technical planning and development.
- Advocate for researchers and the societal impact they wish to achieve throughout the life cycle of their translational research.
Most innovation programs expect researchers to start with a clearly defined problem or market-ready invention. However, discovery-driven research often begins with new knowledge and breakthroughs, not with a specific market demand. We help researchers bridge this gap by taking a business-minded, use-case-focused approach to exploring how their discoveries can address real-world needs.
We are the essential first step in Penn State’s innovation ecosystem, providing:
- Structured pathways for evaluating potential applications and use cases.
- Guidance on aligning technical development with partner and market expectations.
- Support in building the case for impact before moving to tech transfer, I-Corps, or startup pathways.
- By pairing a practical business mindset with a researcher-centered approach, we help discoveries advance toward societal benefit and real-world use.
