The Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology Graduate Student Association (BMMB GSA) was founded in 2014 and consists of a maximum of eight elected graduate student officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Climate & Diversity Chair, Mentoring Chair, and First-Year Liaison(s). Elections are held annually in the spring.
The mission of the BMMB GSA is to build and nurture community within the BMMB graduate student body, both professionally and socially, as well as to facilitate communication between the graduate student body and BMMB department faculty and staff. GSA members represent the BMMB graduate student body, promote graduate student interests, and advocate for graduate students on several departmental committees, including the Steering Committee and Climate & Diversity Committee. To build and support our community, the BMMB GSA sponsors a variety of activities, including:
- Monthly Mixers – Each month the GSA hosts a gathering that blends socializing and science. These mixers provide a platform for BMMB students to practice for talks, posters, or exams in a casual setting with other graduate students, as well as an opportunity to mingle with students with different scientific backgrounds.
- Mentoring Program – A program that connects incoming first years with upper year students for guidance during their transition into the BMMB graduate program at Penn State. Monthly activities have included hikes, game nights, apple and pumpkin picking, and arts and crafts to name only a few!
- Town Halls – As a means to facilitate communication between graduate students, administration, and faculty, each semester the GSA organizes a town hall where BMMB graduate students get to voice their concerns regarding departmental business, climate, and general functioning. This is a great opportunity for graduate students to advocate for the changes they would like to see in the department.
