Message from the Department Head
Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State University,
Our research spans fundamental studies of molecules, cells, and biological systems as well as applied research addressing questions in areas ranging from basic biology to medicine, energy, agriculture, and the environment. Faculty collaborate across the Eberly College of Science and Penn State to address questions that cross disciplinary boundaries. Education is central to our mission. BMB is the academic home for four undergraduate majors: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Forensic Science. We also offer Ph.D. training through the Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology Program and master's programs in Biotechnology. Our faculty and staff work to provide students with the knowledge and skills to pursue careers in science, medicine, industry, and other fields. We also engage with the broader scientific community and the public. For more than 35 years, BMB has hosted the Summer Symposium in Molecular Biology, bringing scientists to Penn State for research presentations and discussion. Our weekly departmental seminar and annual distinguished lectureships provide opportunities for scientists to share advances in the field with our campus and broader community. Faculty and students also contribute through outreach, professional service, and public engagement.
