BMB Welcomes Jordan Bisanz to the Department

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology welcomes Jordan Bisanz to the BMB Team!

The Department is happy to welcome a new face to the Huck Life Sciences Building.  Jordan comes to Penn State from The University of California, San Francisco, where he served as a Postdoctoral Scholar and Fellow working under Associate Professor or Microbiology and Immunology, Peter Turnbaugh.  Jordan began his journey in higher education by attending The University of Western Ontario where he earned his Bachelor of Medical Sciences degree.  Then, while still at the University of Western Ontario, Jordan entered the Department of Microbiology and Immunology’s graduate program where he studied under the direction of Professor of Surgery, Microbiology, and Immunology, Gregor Reid.

 

Jordan’s research focuses on understanding how the communities of micro-organisms in and on us, microbiota, function to impact health and disease.  It was the excellent research environment at Penn State, and within the BMB Department, as well as the colleagues he would have the opportunity to work with and the specialized resources including gnotobiotics, sequencing, and the metabolomics facilities that led Jordan to accept the position.  “I am most excited to continue dissecting complex microbial communities and to create training opportunities for the next generation of microbiologists who are as comfortable at the computer as they are with the Petri dish,” says Jordan.

Jordan did not make the transition from the West Cost to Central Pennsylvania by himself.  Jordan is accompanied by his wife, Meredith, and their soon-to-be born daughter.  Outside of the laboratory he enjoys spending his time in the kitchen.  As you would expect, Jordan loves experimenting in the kitchen, bringing in microbiology wherever possible.  “I also enjoy slaying axe (playing electric guitar) and other musical instruments,” says Jordan.

Although he will not initially be teaching any courses, he does plan to add course instruction to his workload next year.  Jordan is an excellent addition to the BMB Team and the Department looks forward to many years of continued collaboration and partnership.
