Mary Anne Raymond Receives Distinguished Service Award

Mary Anne Raymond, the administrative support coordinator in the Department of Mathematics for the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University, will receive the 2011 Eberly College of Science Alumni Society Distinguished Service Award.

Raymond began her career at Penn State in 1983 as a stenographer in the Division of Special Education and Communications Disorders. A year later, she joined the Eberly College of Science, and by 1986 she had found a home within the Department of Mathematics where she has remained. Since then, Raymond has provided support for six department heads, including current department head, John Roe. They have all relied on her excellent organization, her calm efficiency, her mastery of detail, and her leadership skills among a diverse and energetic staff team. Roe described best why Raymond meets the objectives of the award when he stated, "she remains aware of the human dimension." Raymond also serves on numerous committees within the Department of Mathematics such as the Climate and Diversity Committee, the Computer Committee, and the Personnel Committee.

In 1999, she was chosen as the first winner of the Eberly College of Science Staff Achievement Award and was further honored by the college with the Leadership Award in 2007. As described by her coworkers, Raymond is the "go-to person for the department." They say that Raymond is a leader who is always available to provide guidance and direction. Raymond's commitment and dedication extend to the community, as well. She has given her time and talent to various organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, her local school district, and her church.

Raymond has been described as the keeper of the department's institutional memory and someone who has given much to the department's sense of common purpose. It is because of her accomplishments and leadership qualities that the Distinguished Service Award will be presented to her.

The Distinguished Service Award was established nearly 40 years ago, in 1973, by the Eberly College of Science Alumni Society. The award recognizes individuals within the college community who have made significant and outstanding leadership and service contributions over a sustained period of time. All members of the Eberly College of Science community are eligible for the award.
