About This Photo

composite image of a gibbous moon at 96 percent illumination, resting over the Atlantic Ocean.

This is a composite image of a gibbous moon at 96 percent illumination, resting over the Atlantic Ocean. Composite photography is a technique where two or more images are combined to create a single image. Here, an image of the moon—taken with a 500 mm lens, at a magnification of about 10x—was stitched onto the background image to produce an abstract view of an otherwise commonly viewed astronomical object.
