“Causal Learning in the Interconnected and Interdependent World of the Twenty-First Century”

Since the emergence of agriculture, economic trade, writing and mathematics during the last 10,000 years, networks have played a prominent role. Schweinberger will discuss learning from data in the interconnected and interdependent world of the twenty-first century. In contrast to the bulk of research in statistics, data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence, he will focus on causal learning when the outcomes of interest are dependent due to an underlying network of connections and independent replications are unavailable.

About the speaker

Schweinberger received his doctorate from the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands. Prior to joining the faculty at Penn State, he served on the faculty of Rice University, held visiting positions at the University of Washington and the University of Missouri, and held postdoctoral positions at Penn State and the University of Washington.
