Experiment Confirms Existence of New Electronic State in Superconductors
Image
Picture of a strontium ruthenate Sr2RuO4 SQUID used to demonstrate that strontium ruthenate is an odd-parity superconductor. A thin layer of a conventional superconductor is deposited on the front and two sides of a black Sr2RuO4 crystal. Au wires of 25 microns in diameter are attached to the SQUID for current measurements. Credit: John Passaneau,Penn State
Mysterious Cluster of Stars Discovered Near Milky Way
Image
This clump of newly discovered stars in Ursa Major is in a region the size of the full moon centered on Willman 1. To be able to see this ultra-faint object in the SDSS data, the distribution of stars was filtered to enhance its signal relative to the much more numerous closer stars of the Milky Way Galaxy. Chandra Looks Over a Cosmic Four-Leaf Clover
Image
The Cloverleaf quasar is a single object whose image has been reproduced four times in a cloverleaf-like arrangement through a process known as gravitational lensing.
Making Black Holes Go 'Round on the Computer
Image
Credit: Bruegmann, Tichy, Jansen 2004 Black hole binary after about one orbit. The black surfaces represent the black holes; whatever falls behind this black hole "horizon" can never escape again. The colored plane shows a measure for the distortion of spacetime. The numerical method has succeeded in keeping the data smooth and undistorted.
