Genetic Barrier to Self-Pollination Identified

The S-locus controls the specificity of the self-incompatibility interactions between pollen and pistil. Matching of the S-allele carried by the pollen with one of the two S-alleles carried by the pistil results in the growth arrest of the pollen tube in the style. Only pollen tubes that carry a different S-allele from the S-allele of the pistil will be able to grow down the style to the ovary to achieve fertilization.
