Technology Advisory Board

 

The Board is a volunteer-based group of alumni and friends who have come together to advise our researchers in the translation of their research into concepts for tech transfer and commercialization.

About the Board

We are looking for professionals who can bring experience in:

  • Industry, startups, regulations, or patenting/technology commercialization
  • Technical expertise in mathematical, physical, and life science disciplines
  • Strategic thinking and creative problem-solving
  • Translational research, product development, or tech transfer
  • Mentorship and guidance for graduate students, postdocs, and faculty

No specific background is required—diverse perspectives are encouraged.

TAB members can engage in multiple ways, depending on interest and availability:

  • Project Mentorship: Guide researchers on technology translation, IP strategy, or startup formation.
  • Program Advisory: Participate in reviewing proposals (e.g., Lab Bench to Commercialization) and provide feedback to strengthen projects.
  • Career Development: Mentor students or postdocs on skills for industry and entrepreneurship.
  • Seminars & Talks: Offer workshops, guest lectures, or virtual discussions on industry trends and translational best practices.
  • Board Meetings: Attend one annual in-person meeting and optional virtual sessions to discuss college initiatives.
  • Spring: In-person board meeting (late March) covering research, networking, working group sessions, and program development.
  • Summer: Review translational research proposals (May–June); awards announced in June and begin in August.
  • Fall: Virtual board meeting (October-November) to engage with selected translational projects
  • Year Round: Mentorship sessions, seminars, ad-hoc discussions.
  • Attend the annual in-person or virtual meeting.
  • Maintain confidentiality (NDA required) and communicate any conflicts of interest.
  • Review materials and provide thoughtful feedback on proposals and initiatives.
  • Stay engaged with the Office for Innovation staff regarding availability and project needs.
  • Influence the growth and impact of emerging technologies at Penn State.
  • Gain exposure to cutting-edge research and entrepreneurial initiatives.
  • Expand your professional network with faculty, students, and industry peers.
  • Contribute to meaningful translational research and student development.

Interested in joining the Technology Advisory Board? Here’s how:

  1. Nominate yourself or a colleague by emailing Science-Innovation@psu.edu.
  2. Include a brief note describing why you’d like to join.
  3. Attach a high-level bio or CV.
  4. List your top 3–5 areas of expertise where you can contribute.
  5. Indicate which board activities interest you most (e.g., mentoring, reviewing projects, giving seminars).

 

Next Steps:
Selected candidates will be invited for a conversation with the Office for Innovation. Upon selection, members will sign a standard NDA and be offered a 3-year term on the board.
