Scott Showalter, professor of chemistry and of biochemistry and molecular biology, has been elected a 2021 AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) Fellow. Being named an AAAS Fellow is a lifetime honor in recognition of efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or engineering research accomplishment, and service to one’s field of study.

The Showalter group has made a long-term commitment to develop nuclear magnetic resonance tools that enable quantitative studies of intrinsically disordered protein structure and function. The citation from AAAS recognizes the contributions the lab group has made in this area and toward understanding the structure of microRNA. In addition, the citation recognizes Showalter’s record of service to the field of biophysics in general.
Showalter has previously been honored with the NSF Career Award in 2010 and the EAS New Faculty Award in NMR Spectroscopy, sponsored by Agilent Technologies in 2012. He was also awarded the Eberly College of Science Distinguished Faculty Mentoring Award in 2019.
Before joining Penn State faculty in 2008, Showalter was a NIH NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida from 2005-2008. He earned a doctoral degree in molecular biophysics from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004.
