Brooke Sargen of York, Pennsylvania, will be honored as the student marshal for the Eberly College of Science during Penn State’s fall 2023 commencement ceremonies on Saturday, December 16, on the University Park campus.

Sargen will graduate with a 4.0 grade-point average and a bachelor’s degree in biology. She has received the 2023 President Sparks Award and has been a member of the Dean’s List for four semesters.

“I was surprised to learn of my nomination and delighted to be selected as the student marshal,” Sargen said. “I am excited to represent the Eberly College of Science at graduation this December.”

While at Penn State, Sargen served as a teaching assistant for three semesters for the course BIOL 164: Human Anatomy and Physiology Labs I and II.

“Being a teaching assistant taught me how to interact and engage with students and faculty in a new and exciting way,” she said. “It was rewarding to create an inclusive, enthusiastic, and engaging environment for students to learn and gain the same passion for anatomy and physiology as me. This newfound love has inspired me to look into future teaching opportunities.”

In addition to her teaching activities, Sargen was the president of the Lutheran Campus Ministry and was an executive board member of the Best Buddies club. She also was a member of club basketball and club cross country. Sargen also served as an emergency medical technician from 2022 to 2023.

“I’m grateful for all the opportunities the sciences have afforded me,” she said. “I look forward to continuing my career as a Penn State alumni.”

After graduation, Sargen plans to attend nursing school and explore teaching opportunities.

A graduate of York Suburban High School in York, Pennsylvania, Sargen will be accompanied by her parents Braquel and Jeffrey Sargen.
