Kexin Yi of Henan, China, will be honored as the student marshal of the Eberly College of Science during Penn State University’s summer commencement ceremonies on Saturday, August 15, 2020. Yi’s faculty escort for the commencement exercises will be Cheryl Hile, teaching professor and coordinator of undergraduate advising in mathematics at Penn State.

Yi will graduate with a 3.93 grade point average and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a minor in statistics. She was also a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and has been a member of the dean’s list seven times.

“I’m so glad and honored to be selected as the student marshal of the Eberly College of Science in recognition of my hard work during these three years,” said Yi.

In addition to her academic achievements, Yi led the sound effects group as part of the Chinese Theatre and Movie society. She was also a member of ACEs Dance crew and Abington's Asian Student Association.

“The most important thing I learned here at Penn State was about diversity,” said Yi. “People here, no matter students, faculties or local residents, come from everywhere all around the world. I’ve met people with their own special characteristics and learned many different cultures. All of this taught me how diversity makes this world so colorful and beautiful.”

After graduation, Yi plans to apply for the Master of Science in Data Science and Machine Learning program at the National University of Singapore and begin her studies in 2021.

Yi, a high school graduate of Zhengzhou No.7 Middle School in Henan, China, will celebrate virtual commencement with her mother and father, Junhong Liu and Wengang Yi.
