Groh Receives Two Major Schreyer Honors College Awards

John Groh, a recent graduate in physics and mathematics and a Schreyer Honors Scholar, was awarded two of the major Schreyer Honors College awards presented to graduating seniors: the Paul Axt Prize and the Douglas G. and Regina C. Evans Research Award. Groh was presented with these awards during the Schreyer Honors College Medals Ceremony on May 9 in Eisenhower Auditorium.

The Paul Axt Prize is named for the University Scholars Program’s (which later became the Schreyer Honors College) founding director, Paul Axt. The award is presented to the student who best exemplifies “the passionate commitment to inquiry that promotes high scholarly achievement and the intellectual curiosity and daring that lead to the development and pursuit of wide-ranging interests.” The Douglas G. and Regina C. Evans Research Achievement Award recognizes a Schreyer Honors Scholar “who has accomplished the single, most extraordinary research achievement.” Groh is the first Schreyer Scholar to be the recipient of both awards.

Groh’s academic achievements granted him the honor of serving as the student marshal for the Department of Physics at the Eberly College of Science graduation ceremony this spring. Prior to that honor, Groh was the recipient of a prestigious Barry Goldwater Scholarship in 2013, and conducted research during the summer in 2012 at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider as a CERN Undergraduate Fellow.

John will be attending graduate school in the fall at the University of California, Berkeley to focus on either elementary particle physics or cosmic microwave background polarization.
