The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is a unique funding opportunity which has had a significant impact on research grants in the Eberly College of Science. Since May 2009, faculty in the College has received 40 awards totaling over $30 million dollars.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has had considerable impact on the research efforts in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University in 2009.
ARRA, also referred to as the Federal Stimulus Plan, was approved by Congress and signed into law in February 2009. This stimulus initiative provides extraordinary opportunities to advance scientific research and discovery for the benefit of the nation.
As of early December 2009, The Eberly College of Science has received more than $30 million in research funding from the AR
RA awards, which support 40 projects in wide-ranging fields, including astronomy and astrophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and statistics. Federal funding agencies for these awards include, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Energy, among other contributors. The ARRA awards enable Penn State Science researchers to intensify research efforts in a number of areas, including assessing the safety of pharmaceuticals and medical treatments; exploring developments in space; better understanding ecological processes; and developing new methods for converting biomass into fuel. A multitude of other significant challenges of our time have been undertaken with ARRA funds.
Penn State University as a whole has received over $71 million dollars funding 168 awards since the stimulus plan was enacted.
Overall, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) estimates that the economic stimulus bill provides for $21.5 billion in federal research and development funding, which includes $18 billion for research and $3.5 billion for facilities and capital equipment.
