Title: A Primer on Planet Formation

Abstract:  We review our understanding of the different formation channels taken by brown dwarfs, Jupiters, and sub-Neptunes, focussing on the accretion of gas envelopes and atmospheres. The talk is intended to be pedagogical; wherever possible, we present 1D and 0D treatments and rules of thumb. Contact is made with the latest observations, including: directly imaged super-Jupiters in the infrared; gaps carved in protoplanetary disks in the millimeter; the metallicities and occurrence rate profiles of giants and sub-Neptunes; and dynamics from transit timing variations.

Astro Colloquium and 'coffee & cookies' department gathering (3:45-4:00pm)
