Title:  The saga of the weirdo supernova PTF12gzk and its narrow lines
Abstract:  I will present a short overview of my progress on my current research project about the supernova PTF12gzk. It is a type-1c supernova and the doppler shift of its Fe II λ5169 qualifies it as a 1c-bl (broad-lined) supernova. However, the relatively large shift of this line is not accompanied by its expected doppler broadening. As such, this line is too narrow for this supernova to be considered a 1c-bl. This project attempts to explain or at least constrain an explanation for how both facts could be true.

Title:  Astronomical detectors and their application to X-rays astronomy
Abstract:  A quick discussion on astronomical photon detectors, how they work, and their application to X-ray astronomy. The technology used for observing the universe is constantly evolving, none more than the detectors we use to detect photons.  Therefore, it is important to understand how these detectors function, interact with light, and how certain detectors have inherent advantages for observing the high energy sky.

Seminar starts at 12:00 pm and will be held in 538 Davey and virtually via Zoom:  https://psu.zoom.us/j/92637070419
