What motivates you to do/pursue science and/or medicine?

One of the primary motivations for me in pursuing science and medicine is the desire to make a positive impact on the world and to help others. Science and medicine offer the opportunity to contribute to the understanding of the natural world and to develop treatments and cures for diseases and injuries, which can improve the lives of countless individuals. Another one of my motivations for pursuing science and medicine is the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research and to be at the forefront of discovery. These fields are constantly evolving and there is always more to learn, which can be exciting for those who are curious and driven to understand the world around them. I also love the idea that in the future, because of the education and knowledge I have, I will be able to help people in my own community who look just like me, who have been overlooked and neglected, especially in the medical setting. Unfortunately, many individuals have not had the same opportunities as me, and I want to use the experiences I’ve had to bring about real change in predominantly Black communities.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

To me, Black History Month is a celebration of the dedication and the sacrifice of individuals who have come before me and paved the way allowing me to undergo so many experiences that they were prohibited from or just unable to do. Black History Month is a celebration not only of the strides made by those who came before me but also ordinary individuals that are alive and well today who are continuing to do good work in their communities.
