As an undergraduate, Steve Maslowski was passionate about science. After his first year at Eberly, however, he was convinced he had to give it up.

“I was certain that I wanted to change my major out of science because, even though I enjoyed science, I could not see myself as a researcher or a doctor,” Steve said.

That is when his academic adviser opened his eyes to the unlimited potential of a science degree and he became intrigued with the idea of becoming a patent lawyer. Steve still uses the solid foundation in science that he gained at Eberly to understand and analyze complex scientific principles and concepts as he litigates intricate patent cases on a variety of technologies in the life sciences area.

A Strong Connection

Since graduating in 1996, Steve has remained connected to Eberly, giving back to the community that supported and guided him to his rewarding career. Steve has provided annual financial support to the Science Future Fund and dedicated time as a member of the Eberly Alumni Society Board, both of which aim to help enhance the quality of science education at Penn State, providing advice and support to administrators, faculty, students, and alumni.

Steve is a champion for the sciences and continues to pass on the words and wisdom that helped solidify his path:

“My advice for Penn State Science students is simply to not give up on science - even if you do not think you are a good fit for a traditional science career such as a research scientist or a doctor. If I had not received excellent advice to continue to pursue a science degree, I'm not sure where I would have ended up in terms of a career."

A Lasting Legacy

Understanding the incredible impact of his science education, Steve, along with his wife and fellow Penn State alum Heather, want to ensure that the next generation of science majors are able to follow their passion.

The Steven and Heather Maslowski Scholarship, created in 2019, provides funds to students residing in the Commonwealth of PA with demonstrated financial need to help them meet their necessary college expenses. The couple is looking to further solidify their contribution and intends to increase the scholarship to a level that can provide complete tuition for students for decades to come.

“The best career advice that I ever got was from Penn State,” said Steve. “I'll be honest, it's been professionally and financially rewarding, so the least I can do is try to give back to allow other people who might not have the opportunity, because of financial reasons, or otherwise, to get the same opportunity at Penn State.”
