A New, "Exceptionally Close" Exploding Star
Image
Swift UVOT images showing M82 before and after the new supernova. The pre-explosion view combines data taken between 2007 and 2013. The view showing SN 2014J merges three exposures taken on Jan. 22, 2014. Mid-ultraviolet light is shown in blue, near-UV light in green, and visible light in red. Credit: NASA/Swift/P. Brown, TAMU
A New Pathway for Neuron Repair is Discovered
Image
This image shows a single neuron in a whole animal 5 hours after dendrites were removed with laser surgery (left). The same cell was imaged at 48 hours and 96 hours after the dendrites were removed. At 48 hours (middle) a new dendrite arbor extends from the cell body, and by 96 hours the new arbor fills the entire space normally occupied by the cell. Size of the Universe Now Measured to Within One Percent
Image
An artist's concept of the new measurement of the size of the Universe. The gray spheres show the pattern of the baryon acoustic oscillations from the early Universe. Galaxies today have a slight tendency to align on the spheres -- the alignment is greatly exaggerated in this illustration. By comparing the size of the spheres (white line) to the predicted value, astronomers can determine to 1% accuracy how far away the galaxies are. X-Ray Factory Revealed in the Center of Our Galaxy
Image
This X-ray image of the galactic center merges Swift XRT observations through 2013. Sgr A* is at center. Low-energy X-rays (300 to 1,500 electron volts) are shown in red, medium-energy (1,500 to 3,000 eV) in green, and high-energy (3,000 to 10,000 eV) in blue. The total exposure time is 12.6 days.Credit: NASA/Swift/N. Degenaar (Univ. of Michigan)

Brain Repair after Injury and Alzheimer's Disease: In vivo reprogramming of reactive glial cells into functional neurons
Image
Researchers at Penn State University led by biologist Gong Chen have developed an innovative technology to regenerate functional neurons after brain injury, and also in model systems used for research on Alzheimer's disease.

Marine Biologists Unmask Species Diversity in Coral Reefs
Image
Two corals (Porites sp.) growing side by side. The left colony is bleached: it appears white. During bleaching the partnership between symbiotic algae that live inside the coral cells and the coral host breaks down giving the coral a white appearance. The colony on the right is still green/brown and has a healthy population of symbionts living in its tissue. Photo credit: Iliana Baums, Penn State University.
