Q&A with GPSA Delegate Sadia Afroz

2 April 2025

Sadia Afroz, a chemistry graduate student, studies the interaction of metal ions with phospholipid membranes at the air and water interface. She serves as an Eberly delegate and member of the Advocacy and Diversity Committee for the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA). Additionally, Afroz is the vice president of the Bangladeshi Student Association (BSA), a delegate for the Graduate Student Association (GSA) of Chemistry, and the Science++ Chair for Graduate Women in Science (GWIS).

Q: Can you tell me about your experience as a GPSA Eberly delegate?

SA: One of the most meaningful aspects of my role as a GPSA Eberly delegate has been serving on the Advocacy and Diversity Committee. This committee provided me with valuable insights into the challenges graduate students encounter, allowing me to actively contribute to initiatives aimed at enhancing their academic experience and overall well-being.

Q: What advice would you share with anyone interested in getting involved with GPSA?

SA: My advice to anyone interested in joining GPSA is to embrace it as an opportunity to actively engage and create meaningful impact. From my own experience, being part of GPSA has deeply enriched my leadership abilities, strengthened my professional connections, and allowed me to advocate effectively for my fellow graduate students. It’s genuinely rewarding to contribute to our Penn State community and help shape a better graduate student experience.

Q: What is the most important lesson that you will take with you from your time at Penn State?

SA: One of the most valuable lessons I've gained at Penn State is embracing the essence of lifelong learning and self-discovery. I've learned that it's okay not to know everything as long as I approach challenges with curiosity and openness. This mindset not only strengthened my research capabilities but also made me adaptable and eager for continual growth. Additionally, stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging with diverse individuals at Penn State has deeply enriched my self-awareness, helping me become a more empathetic, reflective, and resilient person.
