Plant Biology Option

For students who want broad foundational knowledge and skills in plant biology, from molecules and cells to tissues, whole plants, and plant communities and interactions within ecosystems. Hands on experiences, from designing and conducting lab experiments to collecting data in the field, using approaches such as molecular biology, genomics, metabolomics, microscopy, tissue culture, and measuring photosynthesis using chlorophyll fluorescence and gas exchange, play an important role in gaining biological knowledge.

The Plant Biology option is excellent preparation for a career in

  • Plant biotechnology
  • Plant breeding and genetics
  • Plant pathology
  • Restoration ecology and native plant landscaping
  • Botanical garden or herbarium curation
  • Plant and greenhouse management
  • Environmental consulting with vegetation surveys

It is also a great route to prepare for attending graduate school or professional school.
