Overview
We offer the following degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), and Master of Arts (M.A.). A Master of Arts degree is only an option for those already a part of the Ph.D. program. The department offers support to almost exclusively doctoral students.
It is not necessary for an applicant to the Ph.D. program to have a master's degree before applying.
We make extremely competitive offers to top applicants.
We begin reviewing applications in January and take into account many things such as Personal Statement, Letters of Support, courses taken (with syllabi and grades), participation in special programs, undergraduate research, prizes, etc.
Entering Ph.D. students are expected to have the necessary prerequisites for the basic, first-year courses. They are also expected to demonstrate clear thinking and potential for becoming prominent researchers as well as excellent mathematics teachers.
Here you can find Admission Requirements, information on Financial Aid, and step-by-step How to Apply instructions. Please take your time to visit Mathematics at Penn State and other departmental pages for our research, activities, and programs.
