AP Calculus vs. MATH 140/141

The following questions are designed to help you decide whether you should enroll in MATH 140 or 141.

 

I have received AP credit for MATH 140

I have received AP Credit for MATH 140 (I have received either a grade of 4 or 5 on the AB exam or a grade of 3 on the BC exam). Should I take MATH 140 or should I take MATH 141? Answer the questions below:

  1. Does your major require additional math courses beyond MATH 141?
  2. Has it been more than a year since you last took calculus?
  3. Are you dependent on calculators?
  4. Are you dependent upon your teacher to learn the material?
  5. Do you have trouble reading math textbooks and learning material on your own?
  6. Do you memorize formulas and algorithms as opposed to understanding the concepts?
  7. Do you feel that your high school has not adequately prepared you for a college course in math?
  8. Take the following Math 140 Final Exam Did you score below a 70%?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, consider taking MATH 140.

I have received AP credit for MATH 141 (i.e., I have received either a grade of 4 or 5 on the BC exam). Should I take MATH 141 or should I take MATH 230? Answer the questions below:

  1. Does your major require additional math courses beyond MATH 230?
  2. Has it been more than a year since you last took calculus?
  3. Are you dependent on calculators?
  4. Are you dependent upon your teacher to learn the material?
  5. Do you have trouble reading math textbooks and learning material on your own?
  6. Do you memorize formulas and algorithms as opposed to understanding the concepts?
  7. Do you feel that your high school has not adequately prepared you for a college course in math?
  8. Do you think you will feel uncomfortable in a classroom that consists of almost all upperclassmen?
  9. Take the following Math 141 Final Exam Did you score below a 70%?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, consider taking MATH 141.
