Chandra X-Ray Observatory
The Chandra X-ray Observatory is the world's premier X-ray observatory, with subarcsecond imaging. Chandra allows scientists from around the world to obtain unprecedented X-ray images of exotic environments to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe. Members of the Department have played leading roles in the development and use of the Chandra. Gordon Garmire is Principal Investigator for the team that built ACIS, which is one of the primary instruments on board the satellite. Through Guaranteed Time Observations and General Observer proposals, Penn State faculty have heavily employed Chandra for a wide variety of research, including High-Energy Astrophysics, Cosmology, Extragalactic Astronomy, and Star Formation.
