Criteria for Designating Statistics as an Area of Honors
To designate Statistics as an area of honors, a Schreyer scholar must meet the following requirements:
- The student must be majoring in Statistics, Data Science (statistical modeling, computational or applied), be an IUG student with a B.S. in mathematics and a Master’s in Applied Statistics, or have a minor in statistics.
- In addition, the honors thesis supervisor must be a faculty member in the Department of Statistics or an affiliated faculty member of the department.
- A Schreyer scholar who is completing an honors thesis in a different discipline under supervision from another department may add Statistics as an area of honors (i.e.: multiple areas of honors) if all the following conditions are met:
- The student satisfies the academic requirements listed above (Statistics, Data Science, IUG in Mathematics with a Master’s Applied Statistics, or a minor in Statistics)
- The thesis includes sufficient statistical methodology and content to be reasonably classified as a thesis in Statistics. Although the scholar will have one primary thesis supervisor, the scholar must also have a thesis honors adviser in each area of honors (i.e.: primary discipline and Statistics). Each thesis honors adviser is responsible for reviewing and approving both the thesis proposal and the final thesis to ensure that the work meets the standards required for designation as an area of honors in the respective field.
NOTE: Please note that, above listed are the requirements for a Schreyer scholar to complete an honors thesis in the field of statistics. All scholars are expected to meet all academic requirements mandated by the Schreyer Honors College.
