Event Series:

You may have noticed an increase in the amount of BS you face everyday. You may have seen it in the news, social media, and sometimes even in science reporting. The sources of all this misinformation are both expected and unexpected. For example, you might be surprised to learn that there is a connection between a common probability mistake in statistics and "one of the great miscarriages of justice in modern British legal history". Interested in learning more?

Science on Tap: On B******* brings together two professors from Penn State that will describe some counterintuitive results that range from the amusing to the heartbreaking and illustrate how prone our natural tendency to muddle probability makes us to BS.

Dr. Paula Droege is a Teaching Professor in the Philosophy Department. Her research on consciousness involves filtering out a lot of BS.

Dr. Dave Hunter is a professor of statistics. When not talking to students about avoiding BS, he works on mixture models, network models, and statistical optimization algorithms.
