Can your research be applied in practical ways to solve real-world problems? Do you believe your research results could be of value to others – including industry or other researchers? This seminar will introduce the basics of intellectual property (IP) and the patent process as they relate to the commercialization of scientific discoveries. We will discuss relevant policies, procedures, and resources for researchers at Penn State, as well as review recent inventions from researchers in the Eberly College of Science that are being commercialized. We will also briefly examine technology transfer as a career path.

Event Series:

Beth Johnson serves as the Intellectual Property/Technology Transfer Liaison for researchers within the Eberly College of Science. She holds a B.S. in Biology and Ph.D. in Entomology and has research expertise in chemical ecology, microbiology, and plant biology. As a Penn State graduate student she filed a patent application on IP that she generated during her doctoral studies. In her current position, she assists researchers during all stages of the technology transfer process, from IP capture and protection to licensing and commercialization. Within the college, she aims to grow the culture of innovative and impactful research that can be translated out of the laboratory for the benefit of society.
