Summer Experience in the Eberly College of Science

The Summer Experience in the Eberly College of Science (SEECoS) is a program that is a collaborative effort between ECOS and the Penn State Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Program. The mission of the SEECoS Progam is to provide first generation, economically challenged students from the state of Pennsylvania with the opportunity to participate in a summer science research project.

Each summer, the Penn State Upward Bound programs bring 120 low-income, first-generation, and underrepresented students (grades 10-12) for a college preparation-focused Summer Academy. This year’s dates are Saturday, June 15 through Thursday, July 25. College of Science faculty are invited to get involved in this impactful program by participating in the Summer Experience in the Eberly College of Science (SEECoS)

As part of SEECoS, faculty members, either individually or in teams, create a short summer course for 8-10 Upward Bound students that combines instruction on the fundamentals of their field with a chance for students to participate in research. The Upward Bound students will present on the research they conducted at a capstone Science Symposium at the end of the program (July 18-19)

  • The science instruction times are 12:40 – 2:30pm every weekday during the program except Wednesdays. (There are a few other non-instructional days in the program – the exact schedule can be shared with interested faculty members)
  • Classroom space is provided for instruction but SEECoS faculty are also encouraged to use a subset of their sessions to involve students in research
