Hyebin Song, assistant professor of statistics at Penn State, has received the Korean International Statistical Society Career Development Award. The KISS Career Development Awards recognize statisticians who are in the early stages of their careers and who have demonstrated outstanding productivity and the potential to make significant contributions to the field of statistics. The awards are presented at the KISS Career Development Workshop at the American Statistical Association’s annual Joint Statistical Meetings.
Song’s research interests focus on developing methods to overcome statistical and computational challenges in modern data sets, which are often complex, large scale, and high dimensional. She is especially interested in developing statistical techniques to help improve understanding of biological structures from data.
"Dr. Song is making significant contributions in the analysis of high-dimensional data, with applications in biology and neuroscience, and in shape-constrained inference for dependent data, among other cutting-edge topics of interest in modern statistics,” said Nicole Lazar, department head and professor of statistics. “It is gratifying to see Hyebin's accomplishments recognized by this early-career award from the Korean International Statistical Society.”
Before joining Penn State as an assistant professor in 2020, Song received a doctorate in statistics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2020. She received a bachelor of arts in applied statistics from Yonsei University in 2012. Song previously worked in the central bank of Korea as a statistician.
The Korean International Statistical Society is a nonprofit corporation that is organized and operated for educational, charitable, and scientific purposes, with the aim to promote the theory and applications of statistical disciplines through scholarly activities, including publication of journals in statistics and probability, scientific meetings, and other educational programs.
