Laboratory Rotations and Research

Finding an exciting research project and a research adviser is a big decision. That’s why BMMB students participate in three to six five-week rotations in different laboratories before choosing their dissertation adviser. You may choose to rotate with any BMMB graduate faculty member who has openings in their research group. The faculty research areas within the department are quite diverse. We invite you to browse the pages of the many exciting laboratories in our graduate program.

Choosing Rotations

Our goal is to have you join a laboratory that will provide an atmosphere and mentoring that will teach you to think critically, to become a well-trained independent scientist, to become effective at communicating your research to others, and reach your full potential. To assist in this process, BMMB provides the following resources:

• A written guide on choosing rotations as well as a list of faculty interested in taking new students is distributed in early July prior to the start of the program
  
   
• Students are encouraged to set up their first rotation over the summer through individual conversations with faculty.
  
   
• Upon arrival at Penn State, students have an advising meeting with BMMB to discuss their scientific interests and potential rotations.
  
   
• During Welcome Week, BMMB 3^rd Year Students present their research at our mini-symposium and the entire department gathers for a picnic. This is a great opportunity to network and introduce yourself to the faculty.
  
   
• BMMB faculty present brief research overview talks to our students during the first two weeks of fall semester to assist students in identifying laboratories that fit their interests (or expose students to new interests!) for their remaining rotations.

Selection of Dissertation Lab

BMMB students may select their dissertation research adviser at the end of the fall semester or they may continue to explore their options during the spring semester.
