My name is Claire Page and I am from Reston, Virginia, which is in Northern Virginia near Washington DC. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Virginia Tech in 2017. I took a year in-between my undergraduate and graduate studies to work as a Chemist for a biopharmaceutical company in Blacksburg, Virginia.
I chose Penn State because of how well renowned the program and the faculty were, but what really swayed me was the interview process. I was so impressed that the faculty and the students set aside a weekend to meet with us and give us a real look at the program. I really wanted a hands-on approach to graduate school and Penn State was by far the best choice! In my free time (whenever I have it) I enjoy spending time in my hammock with a good book, spending time with friends, exploring the area, and going out on the town.
I am performing research with Dr. Jack Hietpas on assessing the utility of smokeless powder additive profiles and isotope composition for brand identification. The additive profiles of the powders are analyzed using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen signatures of the nitrocellulose isolated in each powder are analyzed using Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS).
