I AM STEM - Student Speaking Contest

To identify a keynote speaker from the Penn State Science student community who can inspire and inform the students and families who attend our Expanding Your Horizons STEM Career Day for Young Women event in January, 2018.

Purposes:

  • To develop the science communication abilities of Penn State Science students
  • To identify and showcase Penn State Science students with inspiring, authentic STEM stories
  • To identify a keynote speaker from the Penn State Science student community who can inspire and inform the students and families who attend our Expanding Your Horizons STEM Career Day for Young Women

    Structure:

    Eligibility:

    • Any undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Science


    Round One

    • Students will submit a written response to our speaking contest prompt and also email us a 60-second video to a second prompt. Submissions due Mon, Oct 16th (Submissions should be sent in via email to jxk721@psu.edu)

    Sample Video Prompts:

    Imagine you are in front of a roomful of middle/high school students and parents who have never met you… Do a 60-second intro that gets across who you are and makes this audience want to hear more about you and your science journey!

    Sample Writing Prompts:

    Being a science student is not easy and sometimes little moments of fascination and delight are what keep us moving when the going gets tough. Describe a moment when something you learned or experienced in a science context made an impact on you. What made that moment unforgettable and motivating? How does that science moment tie in with your larger science journey here at Penn State? What advice would you give to other aspiring science students based on this experience?

    Panel of judges would evaluate the submissions using a rubric. Top 10 would be invited to Round 2 by Mon, Oct 23rd

    Feedback would be sent to all participants as part of their development process


    Round Two

    • Top 10 from Round 1 give 5-10 min in-person speeches that builds off of their writing prompt at an in-person session the week of Nov 6th
    • Participants will be encouraged to listen to each other as judges give live feedback after each speaker
    • Top 3 winners will be announced via email the next morning
      • Prizes: $200, $100, and $50 gift cards

     

    Winner will be announced the following morning!
