Greetings! If your company or organization is interested in providing financial assistance for our 2012 or 2013 science education programs please read the following.

The Eberly College of Science Outreach Office hosts up to fifteen “hands-on” science camps each summer for children entering grades 2-12.  The week-long day and residential not-for-profit camps run Monday through Friday from mid-June to early August.  University faculty members develop each camp’s unique curriculum, and researchers, local area teachers, and both graduate and undergraduate students assist these faculty members in the implementation of the camp programs. The camps were created in 1999 as an outreach and service learning initiative to interest, challenge, and excite diverse populations of children and expose them to different areas of science.

For the summer of 2013, fifteen diverse camps are planned such as Energy Science 2.0: The Next Generation, Nittany Lion, M.D., Ecology Camp: The Wild Wonders of Your Own Backyard, Penn State CSI, Marvelous Molecule Mysteries, and Science Leadership: The Elements of Innovation. Each camp has a unique theme and is offered for a specific age/grade level.

The Eberly College of Science is committed to the long-term success of these programs. Due to the academic nature of the camps and the collaboration across colleges, the staff is filled with highly skilled professionals and trained graduate students who set up laboratory experiments and work closely with children.  While the camps are traditionally supported in part by funds from individual research grants, the source(s) of the majority of funding for 2013 and beyond has yet to be determined.

Based on current levels of aid from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to The Penn State University, we have determined that outside funding is vital for the sustainability of the camps and for the production of new curriculum. We are seeking individuals and/or companies with a vested interest in both science education and the community to sponsor our camps and enable us to continue to provide the superior level of education and service to the children in our community and to children from under-served and under-represented areas.

Science – U’s mission is to educate children and inspire them both to pursue careers within the four STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and to be active and responsible citizens of our community. Our program is an excellent opportunity to support and educate the local community. The majority of our campers (and staff) come from Centre and surrounding counties and your help could provide funds to allow more underprivileged children from our area to attend these first-rate science camps.

Your company will benefit in many ways from sponsoring a Science – U camp.

This summer we will provide over 750 camp participants and staff members with T-shirts and keepsake materials acknowledging your company’s logo. In addition, your company will be associated with their sponsored camp in any printed publications. Of note, the camps have gained exceptional popularity both locally and nationally, including publications in Town and Gown and The Wall Street Journal. We will also display the company logo on our website along with a link to your site. These are just a few of the ways in which you would benefit from sponsoring a Science – U camp.

Donation Levels:

While contributions of any size will be greatly appreciated, we have designed two levels of gifts in an effort to streamline our donation process.

Level #1 – “With Highest Distinction”

A gift of $2,000.00 - $7,500.00 will allow your company to sponsor a Science-U camp. Funds will be used for (among other things) scholarships for under-served and under-represented students, camper materials/supplies, and/or transportation to and from the various tour sites.

Benefits of becoming a sponsor:

  • Opportunity to provide deserving children with an extraordinary academic experience

  • Logo on camp T-shirt and other keepsakes

  • Logo clearly displayed on our website with a link to company’s site

  • Company name associated with sponsored camp on all future printed materials

  • Company name associated with sponsored camp in all publicity (radio advertisements, newswires, etc.)

Level #2 – “With Distinction”

A gift of $250.00 - $1,500.00 will go towards scholarships for under-served and under-represented students or general camp expenses such as experiment/activity materials and supplies, transportation, and/or snacks and camp events.  Recognition for your donation will be acknowledged by including your company logo on the Science-U website.

Because your involvement is so important to us, we would welcome the opportunity to personally give you more information about our program and our goals. Please let us know your availability, and we will come to you. Thank you for carefully considering this request.  We look forward to hearing from you soon!
