Fall Student Marshal Jingjun Wang

Jingjun Wang, of Hefei China, was honored as the student marshal for the Eberly College of Science during Penn State’s fall commencement ceremonies on Saturday, December 21, 2019, on the University Park campus. Wang’s faculty escort for the commencement exercises was Dennis Pearl, research professor of statistics.

Wang graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average and a bachelor’s degree in statistics. She was a member of the Dean’s List for three semesters and was awarded the Matthew Rosenshrine Fund for Excellence in 2019 in recognition of her academic achievements.

“I felt blessed,” Wang said about being notified of her student marshal selection. She elaborated that her professors and teaching assistants were helpful and friendly during her integral time at Penn State.

While at Penn State, Wang worked with Pearl to develop apps for statistics teaching. She assisted in revising an existing app, Venn Diagrams, making data input and function smoother for users. Her efforts to resolve bugs in Venn Diagram can be found online at Penn State’s Book of Apps for Statistics Teaching site. Wang also designed and developed Odds Ratio—an app that explores confidence intervals for odds ratios and their use in meta-analysis of real data, which has challenged her because she used advanced coding languages.

Wang intends to attend graduate school and ultimately pursue a job in industry, where she can apply her passion of finding solutions to real life obstacles. She intends to continue working and studying in U.S. for several more years before returning to her hometown and applying her knowledge to better the lives of those living in rural areas.
