Lecture, Film Screening Among Activities Planned for Polar Day on 6 April 2013
The event, which is open to the public, will kick off at 9:00 a.m. in 119 Osmond Laboratory with a lecture on polar bears and climate change by Ian Stirling, a University of Alberta biologist and scientist emeritus with the Canadian Wildlife Service. Stirling has studied polar bears for 37 years, and has authored four books about polar bears, including "Polar Bears: The Natural History of a Threatened Species."
At 10:35 a.m. in 119 Osmond Laboratory, naturalist and poet Elizabeth Bradfield will give an illustrated talk of Arctic inspiration. Much of Bradfield's writings, including "Approaching Ice" and "Interpretive Work," are inspired by her work in the north as a naturalist. Both Stirling and Bradfield will hold a book signing immediately following Bradfield's talk, and their books will be available for purchase.
At noon in 119 Osmond Laboratory, there will be a screening of the award-winning 2012 film "Chasing Ice." A graduate research poster exhibition also will be on display from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in 119 Osmond Laboratory, and will be judged by the State College Area High School Polar Ambassadors. The author of the winning poster will be awarded a travel grant by the Penn State Polar Center.

A limited number of participants also can watch a demonstration of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) -- the kind used by scientists for sub-ice exploration. This demonstration will take place in the McCoy Natatorium at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:15 p.m. Access to either of the two ROV demonstrations is restricted to those with a pass; passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 9:00 a.m. in 119 Osmond Laboratory.
Polar Day is sponsored by the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, the Penn State Eberly College of Science, and the Penn State Polar Center. For more information or for access assistance, contact Patti Kenney (email@example.com, 814-865-0509) or visit <http://www.polar.psu.edu>.
