Position Description 

The Office of Science Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of the Vice Provost for Educational Equity are seeking to hire seven Program Assistants for the Ritner Experience on the University Park campus during the 2018-2019 academic year. The Ritner Experience is a first-year living and learning community comprised of Bunton-Waller, Lenfest, and Maguire Scholars and First Year in Science and Engineering (FISE) House. Applicants should be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, and available for approximately 20 hours per week. The primary role of the PA is to assist with the growth and academic development of each individual on their assigned floor, and the building community as a whole. Successful candidates must have a positive and professional attitude, effective communication skills, personal initiative, the ability to critically think, strong time management skills, self-awareness, the ability to accept and process feedback, work well in a team environment, be culturally competent, and experience assisting with special programming. Duties and tasks include: 

  • Plan, organize, promote, and facilitate programming and activities for dorm residents and special interest groups to promote community, growth, and a sense of belonging 
  • Assist residents in their transition to Penn State and collegiate academics through mentorship, goal setting, and supporting them throughout their first-year academic journey and achievements 
  • Provide opportunities for meaningful interaction with residents, including connecting with them regarding personal and/or academic concerns 
  • Foster a safe, warm and positive living and learning community; effectively respond to and address students in distress and connect them to appropriate campus and community resources when appropriate. 
  • Role model appropriate behaviors as a responsible community member to the residents 
  • Support and promote the mission of the FISE and other scholarship programs
  • Attend and participate in weekly Program Assistant planning meetings, and attend scheduled monthly individual meetings with Program Assistant Coordinator 
  • Attend and participate in staff training and professional development held prior to the beginning of each semester, and throughout the academic year facilitated by the Program Assistant Coordinator 
  • Work in conjunction with Residence Life staff to promote a healthy and safe residential community
