For help in your courses, start with your course instructors, syllabus, and Penn State Learning. The Course syllabus lists the faculty office hours and when and where you can get help.

ASTRO - 525 Davey Lab, 814-865-0418

  • Faculty/TA Assistance: Consult your course syllabus or contact your specific instructor for instructor and TA office hours.  Astronomy TAs hold open office hours for students in all introductory astronomy courses Monday to Friday afternoons in room 510 Davey. Please contact Dr. Christopher Palma (814-865-2255) for the current semester's schedule.
  • Internet Assistance: Ask your specific course instructor if any notes or exam review are posted to a Web site or ANGEL
  • Private Tutors: A list of private tutors can be obtained from the Department or by e-mail ndb2@astro.psu.edu
  • Penn State Learning: offers Guided Study Groups (GSG) for certain sections of introductory astronomy courses.  See Penn State Learning, call 814-865-1841, or visit 220 Boucke Building for additional details

BMB/BIOTC/MICRB- 108 Atlhouse, 814-865-5497

  • Faculty/TA Assistance: Instructors list the office hours for the classes they teach on the class syllabi, and many have TAs with office hours as well.  Syllabi for all courses can be found on the BMB Web site.  Many but not all courses use ANGEL to post information
  • Private Tutors: A list of private tutors is available in 108 Althouse and is also distributed and announced in many classes
  • Undergraduate Lounge: There is an undergraduate lounge, in 101 S. Frear Lab, available to all department majors and offers an area to study alone or with classmates.

BIOL - First Floor Ritenour, 814-865-2329

  • Faculty/TA Assistance: Faculty can be consulted during office hours or by requesting an appointment. For BIOL 110, 220W, 230W and 240W, the faculty hold weekly review sessions.  The times are specified in the course syllabus. The course coordinators for the core courses also hold office hours. Courses with labs have TAs who are available to assist students needing help. The TA office for the core courses is located in 615 Mueller Building and is staffed Monday through Friday from 9:00a.m. to 6:0p.m. TAs in the core courses are available for assistance for lab related questions. 

  • Biology 003:  Peer Learning in Biology:  A peer learning program has been established for all four of the core courses in biology.  Student may sign up for 1 credit of BIOL 003 where they will meet once a week to go over course content and review course worksheets with a peer group leader who has been successful in biology courses.  The course worksheet are available via ANGEL to all students enrolled in the core courses, not just to BIOL 003 students. 

  • Internet and Other Assistance: Nearly all courses in biology use ANGEL to post course material, including lecture outlines, case studies, on line quizzes, review sheets and sample exams.  Ask instructors about availability of these resources.

    CHEM - 210 Whitmore, 814-865-9391

    • Department Resource Room: The Chemistry Department has a resource room located in 211 Whitmore. TAs have office hours there and the department hires other undergraduate students to be tutors in the evening. The resource room is open all day and through the evening. Chemistry Evening Tutorial Sessions are from 6:30 -10:30 p.m. Sundays - Thursdays.
    • Private Tutors: A list of private tutors is kept in the Undergraduate Chemistry Office located in 210 Whitmore Lab.
    • Penn State Learning: offers Guided Study Groups (GSG) for some of the of the lower level courses (often CHEM 110, 112, and 210).  See Penn State Learning, call 814-865-1841, or visit 220 Boucke Building for additional details
    • Internet AssistanceConsult the Course Home Pages for information including study groups, office hours and sample exams.

    FRNSC - 107 Whitmore, 814-867-2465

    • Faculty/TA Assistance: Faculty and TAs can be consulted during office hours and other specified times.

    MATH - 104 McAllister, 814-865-7528

    • Faculty/TA Assistance: Faculty and TAs can be consulted during office hours and other specified times. Many courses have Core Office hours - see the Course Home Page for schedules.
    • Penn State Learning: Provides free tutoring for various MATH courses and Guided Study Groups (GSG); See Penn State Learning Math Tutoring, Penn State Learning GSG, call 814-865-1841, or visit 220 Boucke Building for additional details
    • Private Tutors: A list of private tutors is available in 104 McAllister
    • Course Preparation: Online resources for MATH course preparation, remediation, and content 
    • Internet Assistance: Consult the Course Home Pages for information including study groups, office hours and sample exams.
    • Other: In the past, Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, has provided tutoring in basic math and science courses. Visit the Tau Beta Pi Web site or contact the Engineering Advising Center (208 Hammond Building / 814-863-1033) for more information.  Also, the Penn State Math Club may be of assistance. 

    PHYS - 104 Davey, 814-865-7533

    • Faculty/TA Assistance: Faculty and graduate student office hours for all introductory courses are available on the PHYS course Web site 
    • Department Resource Room: The Physics Learning Resource Center, located in 207 Osmond Lab, is a walk-in lab staffed by as many as 6-8 Physics graduate students. Students from PHYS 001, 211, 212, 213, 214, 250, and 251 can
      receive assistance during operating hours (6:00-8:00 pm Sun. - Thurs. nights)

    • Piazza: Piazza is as an online platform for help, think of it as Facebook for academic course work

    • Faculty/TA Assistance: Faculty and TAs can be consulted during office hours and other specified times.  Statistics TA host Drop-in Office Hours for STAT 100, 200, 240, and 250 in 7B Sparks at Penn State Learning
