Accessibility

Main Content

The Penn State University Eberly College of Science is committed to accessibility and has made every effort to ensure that this site is fully accessible. We have worked to understand the ways in which different people access the Internet and to develop a web site that is clear and simple for everybody to use.

Software and Validation

This site uses the Open Source Content Management System (CMS) Plone and has been designed with special attention to Web Standards and in accordance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG v2.0).

We have used XHTML 1.0 and CSS that conforms to specification, as laid out by the W3C. The site has been tested with both web standards and accessibility validators. If there is anything on this site — accessibility or validation related — that is not according to the standard, please contact the Site Administration.

Accessibility Customizations and Enhancements

While this content management system facilitates good usability and accessibility, we have tried to go beyond that. Following are some of the enhancements that we've implemented for this site and others across the college.

  • Headings - Understanding the importance of headings as a navigation aid for assisstive technologies, we have carefully constructed headings and a document outline that makes the site easy to navigate. The headings are consistent across this site and we are implementing a similar (if not identical) outline for departmental sites in the College of Science. There may be slight variation in the order of the headings depending on site layout.

    The headings are:

    • Title of the Page
    • Navigation in this section
    • Main content
    • Content headings as dictated by the page content
    • Document Actions - print, etc.
    • Footer
    • Personal Tools - login
  • Links - Much like headings, links are often viewed in a list and used as a navigation aid. Because of this, we have attempted to create links that are descriptive of their destination and useful when viewed in the context of a page or in a list of links.

  • Re-sizable text - Users can easily adjust the size of the text on the pages within this site. The links below will resize the text or users can use a combination of keystrokes to accomplish that while on any page in the site. If you are using Windows, press the plus (+) key while holding down the control key. On Mac, press the plus (+) key while holding down the command key.

Text size: Large | Normal | Small

  • Skip To Links - The links list includes links to the global navigation (Skip to navigation) and to the main content well (Skip to content).

  • Text alternatives - Most — if not all — of the video content on this site is close-captioned. Alternative text has been provided for photographs and graphics where appropriate.

  • Contrast - We have attempted to create an appropriate level of contrast to enhance readability.

  • Colors - We have avoided using color combinations that often cause problems form users who have difficulty distinguishing between colors.

  • Testing with screen readers - Much of the site has been tested with a screen reader.

We realize that accessibility and usability require on-going attention and improvement can always be made. We welcome your comments or suggestions. Please send them to the Site Administrator.
