As Bunton-Waller Fellows and Lenfest Scholars, you are expected to exhibit scholarly behavior and achieve academic excellence. All students should strive for the Dean’s List, 3.50 grade point average.
You are responsible for knowing all of the requirements to retain your award, such as grade point average and credits needed. Additional information about the requirements can be found in the acceptance form that you signed and mailed to the Office of Student Aid. You should have also kept a copy of the acceptance form for your records. If you have any questions about your award or need any type of assistance, you are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Aid and your College Multicultural Director. A complete list of the College Multicultural Directors is located in Section H of this handbook.
During the year, many different activities will be offered as part of the Pennypacker Experience. Some activities will be social, while others will be informational or educational. The Advisory Board, along with the PAs and RAs will plan most of the activities, but your input and ideas will be sought.
Your attendance and participation is expected at these activities. It is not enough just to live in the residence hall; we also want you to be involved actively with the Pennypacker Experience community and its activities. In other words, there is more to college than eating, sleeping, and going to class.
Residence hall and other extracurricular activities are very important. You will receive newsletters and fliers announcing the Pennypacker Experience activities throughout the year. Note them on your calendar and plan to attend!
All incoming Bunton-Waller Fellows and Lenfest Scholars are required to register for African and African-American Studies 003: Scholarship and Community (AAA S 003), the Bunton-Waller/Lenfest First-Year Seminar Course. This course intends to foster an academic community in a residential environment. The course addresses topics that pertain to such a community and seeks to enhance students’ academic and social experiences in college. The major goals of the course are to help the students learn to:
Bunton-Waller Fellows and Lenfest Scholars are prohibited from participating in formal or informal intake activities (i.e. interviews, application for membership, and/or payment of fees) that lead to membership in the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the Panhellenic Council (PHC), the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC), and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) fraternities and sororities during their first year of enrollment. The intent of this regulation is to ensure that Bunton-Waller Fellows and Lenfest Scholars have made a complete transition to University academic demands before engaging in extra-curricular organizations that can often times be demanding and place strain on their academic careers. The names of Bunton-Waller Fellows and Lenfest Scholars are sent to all Greek Life councils to ensure that selection for membership cannot occur during their first year at Penn State.
Finally, during the year, the Pennypacker Experience program will be evaluated, and participants will be asked to complete questionnaires. Your opinion counts, so be sure to honestly evaluate your experience. We need your constructive criticism.
